Brendán Bergin- Equine learning and training clinic focusing on Showjumping
Brendán Bergin- Equine learning and training clinic (focusing on Showjumping), Sunday, 22 May 2011 at Marlton Stud, Co. Wicklow from 10am until 2pm.
Originally coming from a non-horsey background, Brendán started riding once a week, soon deciding to travel the world in search of the truth and best way to train horses. He began working with grand prix dressage trainers in the UK and moved on to Australia to work with an FEI three star eventer, this was where Brendán was first exposed to learning theory. Most recently he has worked with former top 100 grand prix show jumper Susan Kjærgård in Denmark.
The clinic will cover our perception of horses and how by using learning theory we can truly improve the welfare of the horse. Brendán's philosophy "Ethical effective training in pursuit of lightness through harmony" was a long time in development and he says he is still learning how to apply it.
The clinic is divided into four sections:
1. Learning theory lecture and discussion
One of the main messages is discussion of collective ideas throughout the day. We hope to look at how horses learn in terms of Showjumping.
2. Groundwork preparing your horse for jumping
This section will focus on practically applying the ideas from the "lecture discussion". Discussing ideas during this will allow attendees to truly be an active part of the learning and that every persons individual ideas are shared as a group. Training the basic responses which will later be used in ridden work is the main part of this section.
3. Jumping the young/green horse and discussion
4. Improving the experienced horse and re-training the problem horse
This will include a discussion and wrap up questions and answers
