Maximising Performance through common ground - Elephants and horses

For approximately as long as man has been training horses - so also have they been training elephants. The uses to which elephants and horses have been used differ widely, but world renowned horse behaviour specialist Dr Andrew McLean is transforming the way elephants are being trained in Asia, by teaching the trainers, in Nepal and India - how to train their elephants in a way that is kind, clear to the elephants and results in safer and happier elephants.

This development is the outcome of a lifetime spent studying horse behaviour - and using this knowledge to train horses using methods based on science rather than relying on traditional techniques, which often result in confusion for the horse - and the development of tensions and resistances. In horses, these tensions often result in problem behaviours such as bucking, rearing, rushing at fences, running off with the rider and many others. The techniques developed by Dr McLean through his study of horses, work equally well with elephants - since their learning processes work in the same way as horses.

On Thursday 19 May Dr McLean will visit Ireland to give a one day seminar on horse behaviour, in the Meath premises of Cian O Connor, top Irish showjumper, to demonstrate these exciting developments on a number of different horses. His life is now dedicated to spreading this knowledge to as many people responsible for training and riding horses as possible, so as to improve the welfare of horses all over the world. Attendees will also enjoy a tour of Karlswood Stables kindly given by Cian O’ Connor.
