Summary Biography of Presenters

Orla Doherty qualified as a veterinary surgeon from UCD in 1992 and completed a Master’s degree in Animal Behaviour and Welfare at Edinburgh University, Scotland in 1993. She carried out further research and study into equine behaviour and learning at Edinburgh University and then at Cornell University, New York, and at Auburn University Alabama, USA. Most recently she has studied with internationally renowned equine behaviourist Dr Andrew Mc Lean at the Australian Equine Behaviour Centre, Melbourne, Australia. (www.aebc.com.au). Orla organised the first ever seminar in Ireland, given by Andrew McLean in Ireland in April 2010 in Spruce Lodge.

Orla currently lectures on equine behaviour in University College Dublin and the University of Limerick. She has been a member of and competed within Eventing Ireland, Dressage Ireland, the SJAI, and the AIRC. She is a practicing veterinarian specialising in animal behaviour and runs the Animal Behaviour Clinic.

Jody Hartstone is from New Zealand where she is a leading Grand Prix Dressage rider and equestrian coach specialising in Equitation Science and Learning Theory. Jody has been teaching dressage and jumping for over 10 years. She has an enthusiastic and engaging teaching style and she teaches horses and riders of all levels, ages, and stages of ability.

Over the past five years Jody has become a practitioner of Equitation Science and Learning Theory – the study of how horses learn and the science behind horse training. Basic learning principles such as operant conditioning, positive and negative reinforcement and “shaping” are taught to riders so that they learn not only what to do but why it works. The result is light, obedient and relaxed horses. The system is very empowering to the rider as the knowledge of how improvements take place and the skill to be able to keep on improving the horse’s responses are taught.

Using the techniques she has learnt from Dr Andrew McLean, Jody is in demand as a trainer not just in New Zealand, but around the world. Some of Jody’s achievements include:

  • Winner of 4th international derby competitions at Prix St Georges level in New Zealand, Australia and South Africa
  • New Zealand National Champion and Horse of the Year Champion at Intermediare 1 level on the stallion “Belmont Golden Boy”
  • Twice New Zealand National Grand Prix Champion on the imported stallion “Landioso”
  • Qualified for the World Equestrian Games in 2006 and 2010
  • 13 years of experience competing internationally for New Zealand
  • Current New Zealand National Champion and Horse of the Year on the Grand Prix stallion “Whisper”
