When things go wrong...

When things go wrong...

Why do horses buck, rear, rush their fences, nap when leaving the yard, shy at unimportant objects?

These questions have driven the work of equine behaviour scientist Dr. Andrew McLean over the past 30 years and thanks to his work, exciting new answers are coming to light.

Dr. McLean's work has identified that many horses are simply confused by some of signals or aids that are being given by their rider or trainer. Most exciting of all, he has also proven that if a horse is re-trained in a clear and consistent manner, many of the above problems disappear!

While Dr. McLean's work has been primarily the study of horse behaviour, he has also been applying the results of his studies to elephants! Even though they are vastly different from horses in most aspects, they learn in the same way, and may also develop problematic behaviours when their training is not clear and consistent... and when an elephant develops behaviour problems, the outcome for the handler can be fatal.

If you wish to learn more about why your horse performs behaviours which are problematic, join us for a one-day seminar in Co Meath on Thursday, May 19. Dr McLean, as part of a European and South African tour, will visit Ireland for a short stay, en route to the UK where he will appear at the BHS National Coaching Conference.

Cian O' Connor, top Irish showjumper will be the host for this exciting event, and the practical component will take place in Cian's premises, previously the yard of well-known show jumper, Paul Darragh.
